                                             Madhubani Paintings
According to folklore, Madhubani or Maithili paintings originated in Mithila, land of Sita, wife of the legendary Lord Rama. Sita’s father, king Janak, asked painters to paint memorable scenes of his daughter’s wedding. From then onwards Maithili paintings developed further to depict social and spiritual themes. Whatever people held sacred and beautiful was captured on canvas by the artist’s brush.   
Initially the paintings were made by the villagers for decorative purposes. Today Madhubani paintings are made on paper and cloth for commercial purposes. Paper for Madhubani painting is specially treated with curd and cow dung to make it strong and durable.  Pictures are painted with natural colours and dyes derived from flowers, leaves, spices, grains, milk, etc.
